“Now who’s not paying attention?” Davit said.

I blinked, taking a few seconds to process what he’d said.

Then, I glared at him but didn’t try to deny his words.

“Sorry,” I said, sitting up in my chair and refocusing on my brother.

At his lifted brow, I knew I had said exactly the wrong thing.

Sorry wasn’t a word that was often in my vocabulary, even with my brother.

That I had used it told me—and him—that he had me dead to rights.

“What’s going on, Elias?” Davit said.

He’d sat up too and now looked at me with serious eyes.

“Nothing,” I responded.

He wanted to push, but he could probably tell that he would get nowhere.

Because he wouldn’t.

I wasn’t ready to talk about this yet.

This being her.

Kayla.

I pushed out of my chair and stalked toward the drink table, mostly because I needed something to do.

Kayla had been in my thoughts continuously in the days since I had seen her.

It had been three days, but it felt like a thousand.

And I didn’t know what to do about it.

Sure, fucking her had been great.

Better than great, if I were being honest.

And a far more pleasant use of my time than our usual petty arguments.

That was exactly the problem.

Because when I thought about Kayla and got annoyed, I could handle that.

But when I thought about Kayla and wanted her, craved her… cared about her, I didn’t know what to do with that.

I poured myself a drink and then looked at Davit with silent question.

“Nah,” he said, shaking his head.

“Why?” I asked.

“If we’re going to be meeting with Father, I want a completely clear head,” he said.

“Smart,” I responded as I took a drink.

“But you’re taking a different approach?” he said.

I shrugged. “The only way I can meet with Father is if my head isn’t completely clear,” I said.

Davit laughed.

“Whatever it takes,” he said.

I nodded and finished the drink. Then, I went back to my desk and pressed into my seat, hoping Father would arrive soon.

I hadn’t said anything to Davit, but I knew I didn’t have to. He was as annoyed by my father’s games as I was.

And this was undoubtedly another.

After the dinner, he had dropped off the face of the earth again and then popped back up and ordered a meeting.

One that he was now two hours late for.

“I wonder why he feels the need to play these ridiculous games,” I said, looking at my watch and giving voice to my thoughts.

“He wants us to remember who’s in charge,” Davit said.

“Yeah, but I’m not a fucking kid or one of his lackeys,” I said.

“No, but he hasn’t realized that yet, or—which might be worse—he has realized it and doesn’t like it,” Davit said.

“Yeah. But we need to get this sorted out,” I said.

“We do. There is tension among the men,” Davit said.

“Anything to be concerned about?” I asked.

Davit shook his head. “Not yet. But I have Erik keeping an eye on it.”

“I thought Erik was retired and enjoying being a newlywed,” I said.

Davit’s nanny and the bodyguard he
